Interview Dr. Noah – Bamboo Toothbrush

Bamboo Toothbrushes
Rocket Launch

Sounds crazy. But it's true. The Korean company Dr. Noah needed only eight weeks from first contacting ZAHORANSKY INDIA to the first finished bamboo toothbrush. Read what challenges Mr. Kyungtae Lee faced on this journey.

CONTACT: What was the main reason to choose ZAHORANSKY?

Mr. Lee: After unsuccessful tests with Chinese copycat machinery, we got in touch with ZAHORANSKY, the company with the longest history in tufting. We were very surprised about the wide range of options available from their India factory. With very short lead times and reasonably priced.

From first contact until acceptance and training in India only took us 8 weeks!

CONTACT: Your first Z.SHARK8 has arrived 3 month ago, how was it going?

Mr. Lee: We had the greatest difficulties with moving the machine to the 5th floor of our building in downtown Seoul. After the training in India with Ananth and his team, we were able to install the machine by our own without any real issues. All typical commissioning issues could be fixed easily by contacting the ZCO team.

Since then, we haven’t had any trouble at all, even though this is our first ZAHORANSKY machine. We have been facing more issues with other machinery, for example with preparing the wooden handles

CONTACT: How was your experience first time in India?

Mr. Lee: We heard a lot of stories about Indian life, traffic, culture, and style of work before our trip. During our stopover in New Delhi, we experienced the Indian air pollution and traffic up close, so many of them turned out to be true. As we entered the ZAHORANSKY campus about a half-hour’s drive away from Coimbatore Airport, we felt like arriving in Germany. Very well organized, clean and absolutely professional! The guards additionally guaranteed that we were very safe. The factory is surrounded by many gardens, flowers and even Mango trees. Indian food was great. Even spicier than our local Korean cuisine. The machine testing and setup, using a ZAHORANSKY sample for our 1st training, went seamlessly. Afterwards, we performed a changeover to our wooden toothbrush together with the ZAHORANSKY technician. This gave us a perfect opportunity to learn everything we need for our later production.

CONTACT: Did you require any service support so far?

Mr. Lee: We simply looked up any questions we had in the excellent manual and could fix most issues by ourselves. Whenever we needed additional service support, we used the WeChat function to consult with the technician from ZAHORANSKY India who helped us solve everything very quickly.

CONTACT: What are the challenges in manufacturing wooden toothbrushes?

Mr. Lee: Wood is a natural raw material. The wooden structure of each handle is unique. We have to consider this, and especially the bamboo rings, before placing the wood in the milling center. The biggest challenge lies in shaping the handle and drilling perfect holes with a consistent quality. Perfectly shaped holes are absolutely crucial for the later tuft quality. That’s why we do the drilling offline, because it simply cannot catch up with the potential tufting speed. How we manage to do so, remains our secret!

CONTACT: What’s special about your brush and the reason for your success?

Mr. Lee: First of all, we just use natural bamboo and no plastics. Milling the handles uses up much less energy than molding plastic components. Both help protect our planet.

Second: A perfect design and high-quality brush; people feel much more comfortable using wood.

Third: Create your personal brush. For just a small charge we can print your name or logo on the handle.
